Montana elk and deer hunts background
At Montana OutWest Outfitters, we specialize in Elk and Deer Combo hunts. On our hunts hunters are able to harvest both elk and either a mule deer or whitetail.

All of our hunts are fully outfitted and include all guiding, meals, lodging, and care of game. Not included are all travel expenses, licenses, processing, and gratuities.

Our hunts are conducted by driving to an area then hunting from there on foot. Our primary hunting method consists of spot and stalk. As with all western hunts physical preparation will increase your odds of success dramatically.

We offer both archery and rifle hunts in the area. Our archery hunts take place during the peak of the elk rut while our rifle hunters pursue both resident elk herds and migrating elk herds. All of our guides are accomplished bow hunters and know what it takes to get archers on game.

During the archery season, the elk are hunted by a combination of calling/glassing or stand hunting wallows. The first few rifle hunts allow hunters to pursue the resident elk herds in the area before they receive a lot of hunting pressure. Later in the season hunters target the Bitterroot’s winter range elk. When snow pushes the elk to their winter range hunters may witness migrating herds of a hundred or more animals.

As with all combo hunts we suggest you pick one primary species to focus on for the hunt. We have much better success targeting an individual species and taking the second animal as a bonus. However, we have many clients fill both their elk and deer tags in the same trip. For past hunter success check out our Outfitter Journal

The quality of the mule deer on our combo hunt largely depends on which area you draw a mule deer permit in. We primarily hunt management units 270 and 250 for both elk and deer and unit 240 for mule deer. For mule deer, unit 270 & 250 are limited tag units. All hunters who book a hunt with Montana OutWest will be applied for mule deer permits in our areas. Unit 270 is considered the top trophy mule deer area in the state of Montana but the draw odds are extremely low. Unit 250 contains some quality deer with reasonable odds of drawing and great hunter success. If hunters are unsuccessful in drawing unit 270 or 250 they will be able to hunt mule deer in unit 240. Unit 240 can hold some great bucks but the area is largely road-less, rugged, and heavily timbered. Keep in mind that on all of our combo hunts, hunters may harvest a whitetail instead of a mule deer in any unit we hunt.
